Revealing the Splendor of Modern Shanghai Architecture

Lester Institute for Medical Research, primarily in the modernist style, is a square-shaped building with some decorative elements reflecting the characteristics of the Art Deco style. This building stands as an important historical and cultural heritage left by Henry Lester in Shanghai, embodying a crucial component of the diverse architectural styles of modern Shanghai.

The main facade of Lester Institute for Medical Research is symmetrical along the central axis, featuring a simple architectural design with geometric decorative details on certain components. To restore the historical appearance of the building’s exterior facade, the restoration work this time adopted corresponding techniques based on the degree of pollution and damage to different parts and materials. The goal was to preserve the original traces and sense of history while achieving overall harmony in the facade.

Based on the former site of Lester Institute for Medical Research, the project will establish the United Family Hospital Jing’an Campus. The main building of the former Lester Institute for Medical Research will accommodate functions such as academic exchange, medical conferences, and outpatient treatment. Through protective restoration, interior decoration, and environmental enhancement of the original main building, the continuation of historical appearance and architectural heritage has been achieved, restoring the historical charm of the building. Integrating contemporary needs for office spaces, meetings, and exchanges, optimization of mechanical and electrical equipment, and environmental improvements have enhanced the building’s usability.

The Delicate Texture Left Behind by the Passage of Time

The southern facade of Lester Institute for Medical Research features main sections on both sides characterized by three-story tall colossal pilasters, shaping vertical lines. Vertical black steel windows and black decorative panels below the windows of the same material enhance this vertical order. The pilasters and tall windows are evenly arranged, forming a dignified and elegant order. The panels below the windows are decorated with geometric forms such as sawtooth and wave shapes, exhibiting characteristics of the Art Deco style.

The design team discovered from historical photographs that originally, there were a pair of copper lamp posts standing on either side of the main entrance of the building. The lamp posts featured a spiral pattern in the middle, typical of the Art Deco style. After 90 years, these lamp posts have vanished. In this restoration project, based on historical photographs, the entrance lamp posts will be reconstructed, fully restoring the original appearance of the historic building.

Cleaning is a crucial undertaking in the restoration of historical buildings. To restore the historical appearance of the building’s exterior facade, the restoration of Lester Institute for Medical Research involves different techniques tailored to the degree of pollution and damage across various parts and materials. Most damaged water-washed stone walls are being reworked to preserve the original traces and sense of age while achieving overall harmony in the facade.

Over the past twenty years, with nearly a century of history, Lester Institute for Medical Research underwent its first large-scale renovation, returning to the public eye. Adhering to the principle of preserving its original character, this distinguished historical building in Shanghai achieved harmonious coexistence with its surroundings in terms of its façade and environment and restored its interior style and details. Whether it’s the refreshed exterior or the restored historical ambiance within, Lester Institute for Medical Research will continue to uphold and perpetuate its century-old medical research mission.

Balancing Rationalism and Decorative Style in Interior Spaces

The lobby, east auditorium, staircase classrooms, west library, and staircases on both sides within Lester Institute for Medical Research are all key protected areas. Straight lines are ubiquitous, from the cast iron lamp frames in the pressed glass ceiling lights to the plaster molding on the roof’s ceiling, and from the decorations and handles on the black steel window frames. They all convey a sense of rationality and severity inherent in straight lines, subtly indicating to those entering this building the characteristics of a medical college.

Before the restoration, the original library space underwent significant alterations, divided into several VIP and meeting rooms. In this restoration project, the original large space has been reinstated. Historical artifacts such as the wooden wainscoting on the lower part of the interior walls, steel windows, and light fixtures have all been protected and restored. The original linear decorations on the columns have been restored based on historical photographs. After restoration, the west wing of the former library has regained its original layout, with rows of bookshelves and towering columns as particularly striking features, as depicted in archival photographs.

It is worth noting that from historical photographs, it can be seen that the decorative pattern on the wooden wainscoting niches in the original library bears the abbreviated English name of Lester Institute for Medical Research “LIMR” and the estimated completion year “1932” (actually completed in 1933). This meaningful practice has also been continued in this restoration project.

Based on historical photographs and existing artifacts, the restoration project will fully preserve the original layout and details of the key protected spaces. For instance, historical artifacts such as the coffered ceiling in the lobby, decorative capitals on columns in the large spaces on both sides, wooden wainscoting in the corridors, and wooden doors and windows, will all undergo protective restoration. Additionally, the terrazzo flooring and pattern styles in the original lobby will be restored.

The decorative style of yesteryears manifests abundantly in the details of the columns. The straight lines on the column capitals add a variable and intriguing significance to the otherwise smooth surface of the columns, making them appear more slender-spirited, and lessening any potential sense of bulkiness. The pendant lights, characterized by straight lines and square angles, unmistakably convey a sense of weightiness. It is precisely this “heaviness” that allows these lights to transcend the mists of history.

It’s worth mentioning that other spaces within Reistad Medical College, though not designated as key protected areas, also reflect the interior stylistic features of the building. Especially noteworthy are the “U-shaped” corridors that run through each floor, which are important manifestations of the spatial layout of this historic building. Currently, the second and third-floor corridors are occupied by rooms on both sides, with relatively low ceilings and a cramped feeling. During the restoration, the original dimensions of these corridors will be restored, recreating the historical building’s characteristics of simple decoration and spaciousness.

The convergence of a century of architectural history and modern medical development here has forged a unique space. It allows contemporary people to experience its cultural essence and charm, while deeply being amazed by the light of technology that transcends the dust of history.
